Vocational Specialists provide direct service to individuals who possess mental, behavioral, or emotional disturbances resulting in significant functional impairment. Work with individuals with mental illness, chemical dependency and offender backgrounds to help them obtain and maintain paid employment. Work in the community in the role of job developer and job coach and as a counselor to assess and develop necessary work skills in job seekers.
Vocational Specialists will provide treatment oriented activities as indicated in the Individualized Service Plan in the consumer’s home, group milieus, and community settings where skills training can be applied and recovery experienced. Vocational Specialists provide services that are culturally competent, age appropriate and address the unique needs of each consumer; and, to empower and assist the consumer and family to access and utilize needed services and supports.


•Provide direct services to assigned consumers according to consumers’ Individual Treatment Plan. Direct services will include: supportive mentoring, guidance, life –coaching, independent living skills training and ongoing support for independent living.
•Communicate and educate consumers, families, colleagues and community partners about the principles and procedures of supported employment.
•Conduct initial and ongoing vocational assessments, identifying consumers’ interests, strengths, skills, abilities, and unique set of challenges towards the goal of matching the consumer with a job.
•Provide job readiness training to assigned consumers and assistance to consumers in securing and maintaining productive employment.
•Assist consumers in job development, job match, networking and job search activities directed toward positions that are consistent with their needs and interests.
•Help consumers obtain competitive employment in integrated job settings.
•Provide individualized follow along services in the community to assist consumers in sustaining employment.
•Develop jobs in the community; reach out to and engage potential employers.
•Provide education and support to employer, as agreed upon by the consumer, which may include negotiating job accommodations and follow along contact with employer.
•Provide outreach services as necessary to consumers when they appear to disengage from services.
•Provide anger and behavior management training to assigned consumers as necessary.
•Develop and maintain cooperative and collaborative working relationships with members of consumer support system, and maintain appropriate boundaries with consumer and the consumer’s support system.
•Track, analyze and report supported employment outcomes.
•Attend and cooperatively and constructively participate in treatment team, supervision meetings, and required training. Treatment team meetings can include: staffing, evaluation of intervention, identification of needs, review of monitoring and linking of community based resources for the individual and family.
•Document all services provided to the consumer and about the consumer to include all billable services and non-billable services. Complete and submit documentation within 24 hours of date of service. Consistently submit time sheets and related paperwork on time every pay period.
•Provide Case Management coordination and document such activity.
•Be available to team members during consumer crisis events to provide information and support as necessary.
•Provide information for court reports and other consumer related reports as required, and attend court when subpoena, or as necessary.
•Consistently maintain established productivity requirements as dictated by case assignments.
•Serve as an FPS Ambassador by positively representing FPS in working with consumers and families and in working with community partners, referral sources, etc.
•Maintain the ability to transport self to consumers’ homes and other community locations which requires maintaining a valid driver’s license, safe driving record and adequate, current car insurance.
•Perform other job duties as assigned and necessary to support consumers’ success in achieving and sustaining independent living in their communities, and to support the mission and operations of FPS, DC.


Required Education and Experience:
Vocational specialists must possess a Bachelor's Degree in human service field and at least two years’ work experience in vocational or rehabilitation field. General knowledge and experience in job development, job marketing and job securing is strongly desired. Experience working with adults with mental illness or similar disabilities is preferred. Bi-lingual a plus. Position requires travel into the community.

•Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certification and Crisis Intervention Techniques such as Mandt training.
•Ability to work flexible schedule to include early mornings, evenings, and weekends as necessary for consumers’ needs.
